Puerto Lopez a unique marine adventure
Ecuador, despite its small size is known to be one of the few mega diverse countries on the planet. In short distances travelers encounter different types of vegetation, nature and climate conditions. This beautiful nation has a little bit to offer for every type of traveler. Especially if you are interested in marine life. Ecuador pacific coast line stretches over 2,237 km from the Guayas province all the way to the north reaching the province of Esmeraldas.
Today´s marine adventure will take us to a little fishing village or hub in the Manabi province known as Puerto Lopez. The headquarters of Machalilla National Park with size of 40 000 hectares of land with tropical and humid cloud forest and around 20 000 hectares of ocean.
What many do not know is that during the period of June to September every year, Puerto Lopez hosts the watching season of the humpback whales. The best palce to do see these giant whales. Highly recommended is the tour to the Isla de La Plata – home to many similar species to those of its world famous cousin. Its name ‘Silver Island’ is derived from the legend that Sir Francis Drake buried treasure there.
Isla de la Plata also part of the Ecuador’s Machalilla National Park. Famous for its abundant rich and exotic wildlife, amazing and untouched beaches, Isla de la Plata offers fantastic opportunities for curious travelers. Search for the island’s great number of resident and migratory birds, including blue-footed and masked boobies, frigate birds, pelicans, and giant albatross. Swim and snorkel in crystal-clear waters, coming face-to-face with a friendly sea lion. Visit a local museum or archaeological site to observe artifacts from ancient indigenous peoples. Surrounding the island are numerous reefs, which has made it a favorite amongst scuba divers and snorkelers.
